The first part of the story ended with Hikaru Shidou, Umi Ryuuzuki and Fuu Hououji finally returning home to Tokyo after helping to solve the crisis that plagued the land of Cephiro, killing the high priest Zagato and, most shockingly, killing the person who brought them to Cephiro, Princess Emeraude, whose wish was to die with her beloved Zagato. It appears that CLAMP’s decision to try and make their names memorable has in at least one way worked. I’ve come across some lists displaying some references, but nothing universal, so every time something new is mentioned, I’d have a look and sure enough something about cars crops up.

Having watched all the series and read the original manga, it is surprising to see how many of these references you can come across: not just places and characters, but even things like ships and weapons have car references in them. That’s what it feels like watching Magic Knight Rayearth. to put it another way, I always like seeing an artist's current take on characters he or she may have originally been drawing years ago, because I think it's really interesting.Welcome to another game of Spot the Car Reference, where we try to find as many automotive links to an anime fantasy series as we can. And I don't know if I care for the thought that some producer at Bandai Visual might otherwise have said, "look, we appreciate the way you draw now, but you have to devolve yourself so that these new pieces you're doing for us look exactly like the stuff you did for us back in the '90s." I mean, it does happen, and it's not that big a deal, I guess, but. So, here, where Ishida's new renderings have diverged even further from the Clamp-ness of the whole thing, and look a bit more sleek and modern overall, I can only approve, even if it's a bit of a misrepresentation of the content, which is of course older. Speaking as someone who's not really a fan of Clamp's art style, I always appreciate the modifications of it by character designers and animation staffs in anime adaptations. They look about what you'd expect from a character designer and animator who only drew these characters at length over a decade and a half ago, but has kept up illustrating since then and thus has gone through an evolution of style over that time, and was then hired recently to produce some new illustrations for this particular product.
